I began writing for newspapers in the Far East. . . . Every night [while writing] a large frog came and called “Waah!” so loudly that I could not concentrate. After periods of deep breathing I would explode, racing out to the jungle’s edge to hurl rocks and anti-ranine abuse. The frog would fall politely silent, allow my breathing to recover, allow me to reseat myself and return to the story.
