[This word, often seen in the phrase “moving crabwise,” can be used both literally, as in the example here, and figuratively, as in indirectly.]
[The Marine pointed to] the row of chairs along the glass front wall. This was not in Victor’s plans. As he walked to the chairs, he would have to face the window. And the watchers.
